Property owners are frustrated in the town of Bath.
Upset with how much property assessments increased countless residents turned out on Grievance Day.
Assessments skyrocketed due to a process called ‘mass valuation’. Essentially, a comparison of market value on properties. It’s a reflection of the market, and less an evaluation of work done to a property or its condition weighed against the last one.
These valuations are performed every few years.
It’s driven by the New York State Real Property Tax Service. Several homeowners noted that their annual property tax bill would go up thousands of dollars, if the proposed valuations were given the green light.
Officials in Bath said the process has left some feeling unsafe in their work environment, as frustrated homeowners reach their breaking point.
