Grenades, handgun recovered after standoff in Auburn

Some residents were evacuated- and one person is in custody after an hours long standoff in the city of Auburn.

The incident began when authorities received reports of a man, later identified as Thomas Harvey, allegedly under the influence of drugs and threatening self-harm with a grenade.

Upon arriving at the scene, a multi-unit residence on Orchard and Jefferson Streets around 3:15 am, the police discovered Harvey was possibly armed with a handgun and violating two protective orders.

Despite Harvey barricading himself inside the residence, police, including APD’s Emergency Response Team, Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office’s Bomb Squad, and Cayuga County’s Tactical Response Unit, managed to arrest him after he tried to escape on foot following lengthy negotiations.

The subsequent search of Harvey’s residence unearthed two inert grenades, an inoperable rifle, two bb guns, and a crossbow. Harvey was charged on multiple counts including an Aggravated Family Offense and Resisting Arrest, and was taken to Cayuga County Jail.

The District Attorney’s Office has recommended Harvey remain in custody due to his previous felony convictions and current charges.
