Canal system gearing up for opening day: Scheduled start of season is this Friday

As the onset of warmer weather hits New York, preparations are in full swing for the commencement of the boating season with the opening of the New York State Canal system scheduled for Friday, May 19.

Teams of lock workers are diligently inspecting and repairing mechanical systems, and initiating the canal flooding process across various locations such as Wayne County, ensuring a safe and enjoyable boating season ahead. Jeff Slowik, the Chief Lock Operator in Macedon, describes the preparations as “a slow, careful process that’s not without risk.”

In addition to the preparations, the NYS Canal Corporation has announced that the Canal system will be free of tolls or fees for recreational use this year.

Moreover, the corporation is on a recruitment drive for seasonal employees to manage the locks, lift bridges, and maintain the surrounding landscapes. Further details regarding job postings and operational hours are available on the Canal Corporation’s website at canals.ny.gov.
