Ithaca police arrested a local man following a domestic incident, in which the suspect fled from the scene.
Around 4:05 a.m. on May 1 police responded to an address on Cherry Street for a domestic incident.
Upon arrival they located a victim who had been assaulted by a person known to them. The suspect, later identified as Gerald Smith, fled the scene and was not located by police.
On Saturday, the 32-year-old Smith was identified and located. He had returned to the location of the original incident and threatened to shoot the victim or himself with a gun.
When officers arrived he fled again into a nearby apartment. He was taken into custody without incident a short time later.
Smith was charged with felony counts of assault, strangulation, unlawful imprisonment, and aggravated family offense. He was also charged with a misdemeanor count of criminal mischief.
Smith was arraigned and remanded to the Tompkins County Jail in lieu of $40,000 bail.
The Ithaca Police Department thanked the Tompkins County Sheriff’s office, New York State Police, and Ithaca Fire Department for their assistance.
