New York Sea Grant specialists Roy L. Widrig and Kathleen M. Fallon, Ph.D., are offering assistance to property owners in the state’s Great Lakes and Long Island regions who are experiencing shoreline erosion due to waves, wind, freeze-thaw, storm surges, or flooding.
With their expertise in coastal processes and hazards, Widrig and Fallon can help identify nature-based or structural solutions to mitigate the erosion that impacts shoreline habitats and threatens the structural integrity of coastal properties.
In addition to providing advice on mitigating erosion, the NYSG specialists also offer information on state and local permitting requirements for shoreline projects.
Great Lakes property owners can access regional assessment options online or contact Widrig directly, while Long Island property owners can reach out to Fallon for assistance. New York Sea Grant also provides additional guides on shoreline erosion mitigation and adaptation practices, including planting native plant species that absorb and filter stormwater and stabilize sand dunes, implementing bio-engineering measures, and installing breakwalls and other hard structures.
