Canandaigua man listed in stable condition at Strong Memorial Hospital: He’s been ticketed for menacing

– Tuesday, 3 p.m.

New York State Police have identified the person shot after officers were called to the 7-Eleven in Canandaigua on Monday.

The updated release from state police and the Canandaigua Police Department identified the individual shot as 34-year-old Thomas Johnson, of Canandaigua.

Police restated that when officers on-scene attempted to interview him, he displayed what appeared to be a handgun in his front jacket pocket. Officers then gave verbal commands for him to show his hands, which were ignored.

He began walking toward South Main Street, and deployed tasers without effect. While officers attempted to gain verbal compliance, Johnson turned toward them, removed what officers believed was a handgun from his pocket and pointed it at an officer.

That’s when responding officers from the Canandaigua Police Department discharged their firearm- striking Johnson.

He’s currently listed in stable condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.

The weapon in Johnson’s possession was confirmed to be an Airsoft pistol after investigation at the scene. He was issued an appearance ticket for second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor.
