Thursday’s game between the Washington Nationals and New York Mets at Citi Field turned out to be a slugfest, but in the end, the Mets came away with a 9-8 victory, snapping a four-game skid and avoiding the sweep.
New York trailed 8-7 entering the bottom of the eighth inning but rallied against Nationals right-hander Mason Thompson. Pete Alonso smoked a game-tying double, and Jeff McNeil put the Mets back on top with a run-scoring triple. Then, David Roberston closed it out.
Brett Baty belted his first home run of the season earlier in the contest. Francisco Lindor hammered a two-run double and an RBI double, while Mark Canha and Daniel Vogelbach chipped in RBIs. Alonso also plated a run with a single.
Joey Lucchesi made his second start of the season and allowed three runs over 5 1/3 innings while issuing two walks and striking out three. Brooks Raley served up a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning.
The Mets will begin a four-game series at home with the first-place Atlanta Braves on Friday at 7:10 p.m. The pitching matchup will feature Max Fried vs. David Peterson.
