Auburn zoning board approves storage expansion at former grocery store despite neighbor concerns

Earlier this week the City of Auburn Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously approved a variance permitting True Storage, the developer behind CubeSmart at 325-327 Genesee Street, to build four additional outdoor storage units in their parking lot.

CubeSmart is situated in a plaza on the west side of the city, where it shares space with Simple Roast Coffee, Sakura Buffet, Family Dollar, and other businesses.

Previously a P&C grocery store, the storage facility has invested significant effort into improving the property, according to board member Stephanie DeVito. The addition of 84 lockers across the four units will bring CubeSmart’s total storage space to 60,000 square feet, providing a boost to local businesses.

The plaza’s owner actually objected to the expansion. They cited concerns about a negative impact on neighboring businesses.

The variance was ultimately approved by a 7-0 vote.
