Mets blanked by Nationals in series opener

The New York Mets (14-10) were held to five hits in a 5-0 loss to the Washington Nationals (8-14) in the series opener on Tuesday night at Citi Field.

Josiah Gray fired six shutout innings for Washington and Mason Thompson tossed scoreless frames.

Brett Baty had the only extra-base hit, and Brandon Nimmo worked the only walk.

Jose Butto, who was called up before the game to make a spot start, surrendered two runs over 4 2/3 innings. Jimmy Yacabonis gave up the other three.

The Mets will try to snap their three-game skid on Wednesday with Kodai Senga on the bump. The first pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m.
