On Sunday a devastating two-vehicle collision took place on I-86 westbound between exits 49 and 50, claiming the lives of two women. The accident occurred at around 6:44 p.m., when 76-year-old Eduard Edelshteyn of Brooklyn veered across two lanes and collided with a disabled tractor trailer parked off the roadway on the north shoulder.
Authorities from SP Horseheads and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene, where two passengers in Edelshteyn’s vehicle, a 72-year-old female and a 58-year-old female, were pronounced dead. The victims’ identities have not yet been released, as their next of kin have not been notified.
Both Edelshteyn and another passenger, 56-year-old Alla Fedosova of Brooklyn sustained injuries and were transported to Robert Packer Hospital for treatment. The tractor trailer’s operator, 65-year-old Claudio L. Castanheira of Florida fortunately escaped the accident without any injuries.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, and further information will be provided as it becomes available.
