Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announces plans to introduce legislation aimed at regulating lithium-ion batteries imported from China.
Schumer, joined by U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, New York Rep. Ritchie Torres, and FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, highlighted that these batteries have caused over 400 fires in the past year alone.
Schumer emphasized the seriousness of the issue, stating that it could become a crisis for the Fire Department of New York and other fire departments across the state.
Senator Gillibrand added that the proposed bill would establish mandatory safety standards for lithium-ion batteries. If passed, the legislation would remove improperly manufactured batteries from the market, potentially mitigating fire risks.
