The New York State Board of Regents unanimously voted to prohibit the use of Native American names, mascots, and logos for school districts and sports teams.
Canandaigua City School District will have to change its “Braves” nickname, while Red Jacket Central School District will no longer use “Indians” but can keep the “Red Jacket” name.
Affected schools must submit a resolution to change their nickname by the end of the school year, and all changes must be finalized by the end of the 2024-25 school year.
Non-compliant schools risk losing state aid.
