On Friday, April 14, the Cortlandville Fire Department was called to Rosen’s Recycling on Route 11 in the Town of Cortlandville at around 5:30 p.m., following reports of a large fire. Upon arrival, firefighters were confronted with heavy smoke billowing from the business, prompting an upgrade to a second alarm to secure additional resources.
The blaze was so intense that it spread to the neighboring building, the Son’s of Sam Motorcycle Club, where it ignited along the roof line. This led to the rapid collapse of the motorcycle club’s roof.
Due to the severity of the fires, both buildings had to be tackled from the exterior. It took firefighters approximately 45 minutes to extinguish the flames. A lengthy cleanup and overhaul process followed, with the Cortland County and Town of Cortlandville Highway Departments employing sand to create a berm for potential contaminate runoff. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Spill Response team was also on site to evaluate the situation and execute clean-up efforts.
The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control is conducting an investigation into the incident. No injuries were reported in connection with the fire.
