What’s next for Schine in Auburn? Historic theater falls behind again

The Auburn Schine Theater’s rehabilitation has once again fallen behind schedule, according to The Auburn Citizen. Bowers Development, the theater’s owner, previously announced that the marquee would be removed and restored last winter. However, the deteriorating structure remains untouched.

Bowers Development has not provided any recent updates on the project, according to Jennifer Haines, the city’s planning and economic development director. Bowers remains eligible for $2.2 million in state funding for the project, including $1.2 million awarded through the Central New York Regional Economic Development Council in 2017 and a $1 million Restore NY Communities Initiative grant awarded in 2018.

They acquired the Schine Theater in 2018 for $15,000 and has since overseen the remediation of asbestos and other hazardous materials. The developer plans to transform the theater into a multipurpose event space with an estimated budget of around $6 million.
