In a dramatic update from investigators in Ontario County, 32-year-old Jerry Lovett who’s currently incarcerated at the Ontario County Jail was accused on Wednesday of engaging in an agreement with an unknown individual to commit a murder-for-hire. The chilling accusation adds another layer of complexity to Lovett’s already tangled web of legal troubles.
Lovett, a resident of Geneva, now faces charges of first-degree attempted murder and second-degree conspiracy. This comes in addition to the second-degree attempted murder charge he is already facing following a harrowing incident on January 7. During this altercation, Geneva police claim that Lovett confessed to shooting a man multiple times in the face and chest at a North Genesee Street apartment. In a gruesome twist, Lovett himself was then allegedly stabbed multiple times by 53-year-old Erwin Wineglass.
Wineglass was subsequently charged with second-degree attempted murder and third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance after police discovered a significant amount of crack cocaine. Although the identity of the shooting victim and the nature of the dispute remain unclear, police have confirmed that neither Lovett nor the victim resided at the scene of the crime.
At this time, it is unclear whether the newly levied charges are connected to the January 7 incident.
Several law enforcement agencies have been involved in the investigation including the Ontario County Sheriff’s Special Investigation Unit, the Wayne and Seneca County sheriff’s offices, the Geneva and Canandaigua police departments, and the Ontario County District Attorney’s Office.
Following his arraignment on the new charges, Lovett was returned to Ontario County Jail without bail. Meanwhile, the shooting victim from the January 7 incident has since been treated and released from Rochester’s Strong Memorial Hospital. Lovett, who was also treated at the hospital, remains in the custody of the Ontario County sheriff.
Erwin Wineglass is currently free on bail.
