Suspect tried stealing man’s car with his wife still inside: Larceny ultimately thwarted by victim

A man was taken into custody after an attempted car theft in Monroe County on Saturday afternoon.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was called to the Delta Sonic on West Henrietta Road around 2:30 p.m. after reports of a man with a gun. When they arrived, deputies found that the suspect had entered the victim’s car while the victim was preparing to pump gas.

The suspect drove away with the victim’s wife in the passenger seat, but the victim chased after the car and drew his legally owned handgun. The suspect then briefly stopped the car, and the victim opened the driver’s door, but the suspect began driving in reverse, pinning and dragging the victim with the car.

The suspect then drove forward and crashed into another vehicle. A witness helped detain the suspect as the victim held him at gunpoint. The victim was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

Keith Dobles, 33, is charged with first-degree robbery, two counts of second-degree robbery, and second-degree assault. Dobles was arraigned in Henrietta Town Court and remanded to county jail on bail. Deputies say further charges may come in the future. No one was seriously injured during the incident.
