Yankees open season with 5-0 victory over Giants

The Yankees opened the 2023 season with a 5-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

After Gerrit Cole set the tone with three strikeouts in the top of the first inning, Aaron Judge crushed a solo home run over the center field wall in his first at-bat and the Yankees rolled from there.

Gleyber Torres smacked a two-run homer into the right field seats in the fourth to extend the lead to 3-0.

New York added two more runs in the seventh to make it 5-0. DJ LeMahieu smoked one through the left side for a two-out RBI single and Judge followed that with a broken-bat single to shallow center field.

Cole went on to set a new Yankees Opening Day record with 11 strikeouts over six shutout innings. Wandy Peralta (0.2 IP), Jonathan Loáisiga (0.1 IP), and Ron Marinaccio (2.0 IP) combined to get the final nine outs.

Anthony Volpe went 0-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base in his Major League debut.

The Yankees and Giants will continue their three-game series on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. Clarke Schmidt will take the mound.
