The New York Mets received some unfortunate news hours before their season opener against the Miami Marlins.
Veteran starting pitcher Justin Verlander suffered a low-grade teres major strain and was placed on the 15-day Injured List. He will continue throwing at moderate intensity and will be re-evaluated in a week, the team announced.
Tylor Megill was called up from Triple-A Syracuse and will start in Verlander’s place, general manager Billy Eppler said.
This news comes after starting pitcher José Quintana went down with a lesion on his rib that will keep him out until at least July.
