The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester’s settlement with survivors of child sexual abuse has received an update.
The settlement, which came after the survivors filed lawsuits against the diocese under the New York Child Victim’s Act, has seen two of the diocese’s insurance companies agree to pay an additional $20.6 million.
This sum is in addition to the $55 million already agreed to be paid by the diocese and its parishes to settle the lawsuits.
However, the total settlement is still pending approval by the bankruptcy court and the 475 survivors who brought the case. As a result of the lawsuits, the Diocese of Rochester filed for bankruptcy, followed by four other dioceses across the state.
