Police warn of phone scam where perpetrators pretend to be law enforcement

The Ithaca Police Department is warning the community about a phone scam in which scammers use the department’s phone number to trick individuals into believing they are speaking with a police officer.

The scammer then demands that the victim send them money under the threat of arrest.

The Ithaca Police Department has made it clear that it will never call anyone and ask them to send money to the department under the threat of arrest. The department urges community members to be vigilant and to contact them if they receive any suspicious calls.

In the event that a call seems suspicious, individuals are encouraged to hang up and contact the Ithaca Police Department immediately to verify and report the incident. The department can be reached through police dispatch at 607-272-3245, police administration at 607-272-9973, the police tipline at 607-330-0000, or by sending an email to www.cityofithaca.org/ipdtips.

By being aware and vigilant, members of the community can help prevent these types of scams and protect themselves from financial harm.
