There are going to be some significant changes coming later this year in the town of Fleming.
On Monday, March 20, the Fleming Town Board held a public hearing discussing a resolution that would dissolve the Fleming Fire Protection District, then create a new one known as the “Fleming Fire Protection District.”
Since the mid-1900s the town of Fleming has been covered by two departments. Fleming Fire Department No. 1, Inc. and Fleming Fire Co. 2. Both operate within the aforementioned district.
After that public hearing the Town Board voted to dissolve the Fleming Fire Protection District and form a new Fleming Fire District, which would officially be active October 2, 2023.
The new Fleming Fire District would have a publicly elected set of Fire Commissioners who will oversee operations of one single entity comprised of both departments.
No changes would be made to the primary response area, which would remain within the town’s current borders.
“The membership of the Fleming Fire Department No. 1 Inc. stresses to the residents of Fleming that their fire protection, rescue and emergency medical services will not be interrupted during this transition,” they said in a statement. “We look forward to working with the Town of Fleming, along with the Fleming Fire Co. 2, to ensure a smooth transition during this process, with an end goal of providing the best services possible to residents.”
The Town is expected to give updates on this as the new fire district is formed.
