Phelps, NY is known as the Sauerkraut Capital of the World due to its long history of sauerkraut production and its significant contribution to the industry. The town has been home to several large sauerkraut producers, including the H.J. Heinz Company, which operated a sauerkraut factory in Phelps for over 70 years.
On Tuesday night’s Jeopardy! broadcast, the answer to the question, “What is Sauerkraut?” appeared on the game show’s big board.
The town’s fertile soil and abundant cabbage crops have also contributed to its reputation as a sauerkraut hub. In fact, Phelps hosts an annual Sauerkraut Weekend festival each August, which celebrates the town’s sauerkraut heritage with live music, food vendors, and a parade.
