Convenience stores say NY should crack down on smuggled cigarettes

Illegally smuggled cigarettes are a hot topic in Albany right now.


There’s been plenty of talk about the added tax Gov. Kathy Hochul hopes to attach to cigarette sales. There’s also the flavored tobacco ban that was deemed discriminatory and not included in the One House budget.

However, the New York Association of Convenience Stores says nearly $1 billion has been lost in the last year from illegally smuggled tobacco products.

That’s why they’re calling for better enforcement of tobacco regulations.

Specifically, they say the focus should be on anti-smuggling efforts.
