The state’s legislature took a step to knock down another portion of Governor Kathy Hochul’s proposed budget in the criminal justice arena.
Once again, it highlights how far Hochul is from her Democratic counterparts in the Senate and Assembly.
The most-recent proposal to be knocked down would change the minimum hiring age for corrections officers from 21 to 19. Hochul saw it as an opportunity to increase the candidate pool and address staffing shortages at prisons across New York.
Democrats did not include it in their one-house budget, which was released earlier this week.
There was no clear answer on why the proposal was eliminated from the budget.
