The Watkins Glen Central School District will not be allowed to keep its ‘Senecas’ mascot.
The state made the rule after the district requested that it be allowed to keep its Native mascot as a tribute to its geography and Seneca Lake.
The newly-formed Indigenous Mascot Advisory Group ruled that given its history and connection with an Indigenous Nation, it could not continue with its name.
Now, the district will need to change its namesake by the end of the school year.
