BOYS BASKETBALL: Newark advances to Far West Regional

Another Wayne-Finger Lakes team has advanced to the New York State Far West Regional.

The Newark Reds (20-4) held on for a 66-59 victory over the Wellsville Lions (14-10) on Wednesday night at Penn Yan Academy in what was a wild game, especially in the second half.

Newark led 30-20 after 16 minutes of play and really opened it up in the second half. They went on a 16-0 run and held a 22-point lead after three quarters. However, Wellsville came storming back and cut the lead to four with just over a minute left in the contest, but the Reds hit some big free throws and held on for the win.

Kellen Foster led the way for Newark with a game-high 20 points. Brayden Steve knocked down three three-pointers and finished with 17 points. Raeshawn Howard netted 15 points, with 13 coming in the second half. Daveon Wright also finished in double figures as he added 10.

Re-listen to the game: Jim Sinicropi and Greg O’Connor had the call on FL1 Radio.

Newark will face Section VI Class B2 champion, Fredonia, in the NYS Far West Regional on Saturday at Gates-Chili High School. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:15 p.m.
