The Cayuga County Tourism Office announced the return of the Harriet Tubman Events Grant for the second year. The grant offers Cayuga County businesses and organizations the opportunity to apply for funds to create an event, activity or performance that celebrates and honors Harriet Tubman’s life and legacy.
The grant aims to support events that will take place from March through December 2023, with a focus on those that honor Harriet Tubman’s legacy and support inclusive activities. The office received an overwhelming response from the community last year and is excited to see even more creative ideas come to life in 2023.
In 2022, 17 organizations received the grant, including the Seward House Museum, Howland Stone Store Museum, Aaduna, and Fair Haven Community Arts Center. The grant recipients expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to showcase their creativity and support from the office.
“Cayuga Film Festival’s grant was instrumental in putting together a wonderfully successful event this year!” said one grant recipient. The Montezuma Historical Society also expressed gratitude for the support, saying, “Tour Cayuga’s financial support provided the opportunity to reveal [the truth of] a story from 1896 when we are so deeply in need of understanding the human story.”
Karen Kuhl, Executive Director of the Cayuga County Office of Tourism, emphasized the importance of honoring Harriet Tubman’s legacy in the community. “Harriet Tubman chose to spend over 50 years of her life in Cayuga County, and these events are an opportunity to honor her,” Kuhl said. “We hope many of these events will become annual traditions and Harriet Tubman’s legacy continues to be elevated.”
The grant application process is now open, and interested organizations can apply online through the Cayuga County Tourism Office website. The office encourages all creative and inspiring ideas that celebrate Harriet Tubman’s life and legacy.
With the support of the Harriet Tubman Events Grant, Cayuga County can continue to commemorate the incredible contributions of Harriet Tubman and create a lasting impact in the community.
