Brian Scanlan, a retired Auburn firefighter, has been endorsed by the Cayuga County Democratic Committee to run for county clerk in a bid to continue his career in public service.
Scanlan is aiming to succeed Sue Dwyer, a Republican, who has served nearly two decades as county clerk. Dwyer announced in December that she will not seek another term this year. With Scanlan’s candidacy, there will likely be a contested race for county clerk for the first time in 20 years. Dwyer ran unopposed in the 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019 elections.
A lifelong resident of the county, Scanlan worked as an Auburn firefighter for almost 25 years. During that time, he served on several local committees as the fire department’s representative and was also a member of a county emergency communications panel during the installation of the new radio system.
The petitioning period for candidates to qualify for the ballot began on Tuesday and will continue through March. Petitions must be filed in early April.
