Cayuga County’s public health director, Kathleen Cuddy, has proposed the hiring of a deputy director to support the department’s daily operations. Cuddy outlined her vision for the job at the monthly Cayuga County Board of Health meeting on Tuesday, explaining that having a deputy director would free her up to work with local, regional, and state partners on public health issues.
Cuddy has been serving as public health director since her appointment in 2016, after serving as the deputy director of the Cayuga County Health Department.
She emphasized that a long-term benefit of hiring a deputy would be ensuring the department has a clear successor when she departs, although she noted that she is “too young to retire” now.
Cuddy’s proposal gained the support of the county Board of Health, which voted unanimously to endorse the request. The Cayuga County Legislature will have the final say, but Cuddy is grateful for the board’s backing.
