Auburn will get new Mexican restaurant next month

Grant Avenue Plaza’s former Munchies will soon have a new tenant as partners Pedro Alonso and Roberto Lazaro plan to open Costa Grande, a Mexican restaurant, by the middle of March.

In a conversation with The Auburn Citizen on Tuesday, Alonso shared that the restaurant would feature traditional Mexican cuisine, such as enchiladas and burritos, with some modern twists. However, the eatery will differentiate itself from other Mexican restaurants in the area by emphasizing seafood dishes, among other things.

The decision to open the restaurant in Cayuga County was based on the rising Hispanic population, which has increased by 30% since 2013, according to U.S. Census data. Additionally, there are currently no Mexican restaurants in the Auburn area, though there are Tex-Mex options like Mesa Grande Taqueria and Moe’s Southwest Grill in Auburn. Chipotle is also opening a new location on Grant Avenue in Sennett, and Casa Azteca will be opening in Aurelius later this year.
