A Rochester man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for assaulting his ex-girlfriend and her 17-year-old son by stabbing them. Marvin Rojas-Maldonado attacked the victims on Avenue D in August 2021, just days after he was arrested for threatening his ex-girlfriend, according to prosecutors.
The son, who suffered severe injuries, was close to death in the aftermath of the incident. Rojas-Maldonado was convicted of attempted murder, assault, and other charges.
The case highlights the prevalence of domestic violence in the state, which has seen a significant rise in such cases since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Advocates say cases like this underscores the need for improved support for victims.
