Sheriff: No students injured after car crashes across Cato Elementary School lawn

Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck provided an update on a crash that happened in front of the Cato Elementary School.

On February 9th around 2 p.m. deputies responded to a vehicle that had driven across the front lawn of the Cato Elementary School and struck a curb near the student pickup area.

Deputies were met by Cato Meridian school officials and a school resource officer, who had removed the keys from the vehicle, which was being operated by a student’s parent.

As result, the operator, identified as 40-year-old Sara Schumacher, of Cato was arrested and charged with aggravated DWI, uninsured vehicle, aggravated unlicensed operation, and suspended registration.

No students were injured, Schenck added in the release.

Schumacher is due in court at a later date.
