A hunter in Yates County recently faced penalties for illegal hunting activities, police say.
On November 12th, 2022, DEC police were patrolling in the town of Italy when they stopped a young man riding an ATV without a helmet. During a visit to the rider’s camp, officers discovered a shed with bags of corn and sweet feed as well as a dead 10-point buck in the back of a pickup truck.
The hunter emerged from the cabin with his deer tag in a bag and admitted to illegally harvesting the deer using bait at a pre-established pile near an elevated box blind.
The hunter agreed to an administrative penalty of $600 for the charges of illegally harvesting a whitetail deer, feeding deer, hunting with bait, failing to attach a carcass tag, and hunting with a crossbow less than 17 inches wide.
The deer meat was donated.
