Debate over tipping increases as more point of sale systems incorporate requests for tips

Has tipping gone too far?

That question has been posed more-and-more frequently, as fast food restaurants join the ranks of businesses that give customers that option when checking out.

Customers are split on it. One such individual FingerLakes1.com spoke with last week shared frustration. “It’s everywhere, and happening in environments when you’re just left asking yourself ‘Why am I being asked this?’,” Richard Alster, a Cayuga County resident said.

Recently, WSYR-TV in Syracuse spoke with customers who were split on the matter. Some felt it was necessary, others felt it was an overreach.

Alster told FingerLakes1.com that he expects to see more of it as self-service terminals pop up at more small businesses. “Card payment systems can do a lot more than they could a decade or two ago, so I understand why businesses are implementing it as often as they are. I’m just not a fan.”

The debate will undoubtedly continue.
