There’s officially a Democrat in the race for mayor in Waterloo.
Following a caucus meeting of village Democrats, Gina Suffredini emerged as the candidate of choice.
It came after the news this week that incumbent Republican Jack O’Connor was ending his bid for re-election, clearing the way for Republicans to get behind Walt Bennett. While a primary will still be held on Tuesday, it’s likely that a showdown between Suffredini and Bennett be the main storyline heading into the March 21st election.
Suffredini has been a member of the village board for a decade first getting elected in 2013.
Village Trustee Lee Boise and Larry Warfel also received support from Democrats to seek terms on the board. They will face off against Patricia Bartran and Andrew Trahms, the Republicans running for trustee.
