Rochester teen accused of stealing Hyundai in Geneva, leading police on brief pursuit

Police say one person is in custody after an overnight vehicle theft and pursuit in Geneva.

On Thursday, January 26th at 12:50 a.m. police observed a Hyundai sedan traveling the wrong-way on Union Street in the City of Geneva. When Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the vehicle failed to comply.

After a brief pursuit, the vehicle eventually came to a stop at an apartment complex located on Reed Street Extension in the Town of Geneva. Once the vehicle came to a stop, the operator fled on foot. The operator was later located and placed into custody without incident.

Upon further investigation, officers learned that the vehicle was stolen from a parking lot in the downtown area of Geneva. The operator, later identified as a 15-year-old male Rochester resident, had broken out one of the vehicle’s windows and manipulated the ignition to start the vehicle.

The juvenile was transferred to the Rochester Police Department as he had an active warrant from their agency for third-degree grand larceny. The juvenile’s local charges will be handled through Ontario County Probation and Family Court.

The Geneva Police Department was assisted by the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.
