WARN notice confirms D&C will shutter printing plant in Greece: 108 employees will lose jobs

Major changes continue in the world of news.

Gannett has confirmed that 108 employees of the Democrat and Chronicle printing plant in Greece will lose their jobs as the facility is set to close in April.

The D&C, along with other newspapers, will have their publication shifted out of state.

Parent company Gannett has made a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification to the state Department of Labor.

The closure is due to a shift in business focus towards digital and subscription-based delivery, as digital delivery of news and advertising continues to grow in popularity.

Gannett and other publishers are focusing on online delivery of news and the D&C is close to having more digital-only subscribers than print subscribers.

This has led to a decline in printed newspaper circulation and a surplus of printing press capacity.

The D&C and other Gannett-owned newspapers in New York state will now be printed in Rockaway, New Jersey, while others will be produced in Canton, Ohio. The changeover will begin with the D&C published on Tuesday, April 11th. Delivery times for the D&C will not be affected.
