One person is in critical condition and a suspect in custody following an intense standoff that took place in Big Flats on Friday.

Theodore C. Swan, 34, of Big Flats has been arrested and charged with second-degree attempted murder.

The incident began when police received a 911 call at 10:48 a.m. reporting a stabbing at 171 Burkeshire Drive.

Upon arriving at the scene, deputies found a 29-year-old man who had been stabbed multiple times in the upper chest and once in the arm. The victim was transported to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre and remains in critical condition.

A police perimeter was established as it was suspected that Swan was still inside the residence.

The standoff lasted over three hours, and police used a robot to confirm Swan’s location inside the residence.

After failing to comply with demands to exit the residence, Swan finally surrendered after chemical agents were deployed into the building.

Swan was arraigned at the Big Flats Town Court and committed to the Chemung County Jail in lieu of $250,000 cash.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and additional charges against Swan are anticipated.
