Select words like ‘Independence’ banned from party lines moving forward in New York to avoid voter confusion

Have you ever been confused about the difference between “Independence” and “Independent” parties?

The existence of both has confused voters; and even meant some have incorrectly enrolled.

A new law signed by Governor Kathy Hochul takes aim at the use of words like ‘Independence’ or ‘Independent’ on ballot lines to reduce confusion.

Other words that won’t be allowed include American, United States, National, New York State, and Empire State.

The Independence Party failed to meet requirements for keeping its ballot status.
