The Buffalo Sabres’ (10-13-1) third-period comeback fell short as they lost to the Colorado Avalanche (13-7-1), 6-4, on Thursday night at KeyBank Center.
Buffalo trailed 5-3 after two periods but cut Colorado’s lead to one with a goal seven seconds into the third period. Following that, the Sabres had a chance to tie the game with two power play opportunities but could not capitalize. The Avalanche sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 34 seconds remaining.
Tage Thompson and Dylan Cozens each had a goal and two assists. JJ Peterka and Dylan Cozens also netted goals, while Jeff Skinner collected a pair of assists.
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made his fourth start of the season and turned aside 28-of-33 shots.
Buffalo finished 2-for-7 on the power play, while Colorado went 3-for-6.
The Sabres will try to get back in the win column on Sunday when they host the San Jose Sharks at 7 p.m.
