The state Department of Transportation is continuing to recruit ahead of the winter season.
While winter got off to a fast start in Western New York a couple weeks ago, DOT officials say they’re still short-staffed.
They typically employ around 3,800 supervisors and operators during the winter months across New York.
Right now, they have about 543 openings. That means less than 100 positions have been filled since an October 12th announcement that 617 positions were available.
Candidates must be 18 years old and pass a physical and drug test. Some positions require a clean Class A or B commercial driver’s license.
DOT offers in-house commercial driver training and road tests to get licenses.
