Herons fall at Hamilton, 59-43

The William Smith College basketball team fell to Hamilton Tuesday evening in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House, 59-43. The Herons fall to 1-3 while the Continentals move to 4-1 on the season.

Junior Brooke Jarvis led the Herons with 10 points, shooting 60% from the free-throw line. Senior Lauren DeVaney chipped in 11 rebounds for the Herons, surpassing the 500 career rebound mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Herons and Continentals both came out strong, sharing the early points. Senior Kerstin Kelly hit a big three-pointer to tie the game early on.
  • Hamilton looked to go on a run to extend their lead, but first-year Mara Bledsoe converted a layup to cut the Continentals’ lead to five.
  • Smythe led the Heron offense in the second quarter, posting four of her six first-half points.
  • DeVaney and sophomore Maddie Patrick posted four rebounds each in the first half.
  • The third quarter was an even battle between the Herons and the Continentals as William Smith continued to grow into the game. Kelly hit her second three-pointer of the night to keep the Herons in the contest.
  • William Smith fought back in the fourth, outscoring the Continentals 20-11 in the final quarter.
  • Junior Brooke Jarvis chipped in six second-half points while Devaney added seven rebounds to help the Herons to a second-half surge.
  • William Smith’s second-half push would fall short as the Continentals finished on top, 59-43.

“Hamilton is a really strong team coming off a win against ranked St. John Fisher,” said Head Coach Lindsay Sharman. “Once we found our rhythm in the second half, we outplayed them and held them to 20 points.”

UP NEXT

William Smith will be back in action on Friday, December 2, when they open up conference play against RPI. Tip off between the Herons and the Engineers is set to start at 5:30 in Bristol Gymnasium.
