The Cayuga County Health Department has issued a boil water advisory for those in Cato.
On Wednesday, the water system lost pressure due to a water main break, which increases the chances of untreated water making its way to consumers homes.
Harmful microbes in drinking water can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms and may pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems, according to the health department.
Residents are asked to bring tap water up to a rolling boil for a minute before consuming.
The order should be lifted in the coming days.
