Two members of the Hobart College ice hockey team were honored by the New England Hockey Conference on Monday. Sophomore forward Luke Aquaro was named the conference’s Player of the Week and first-year goalie Damon Beaver was named the Rookie of the Week.
Aquaro led the Statesmen with four points on three goals and an assist. On Friday night, he played hero scoring the game-winning goal 1:49 into the overtime period as Hobart rallied to defeat Buffalo State 4-3. The next day Aquaro scored a pair of goals in the Statesmen’s 5-0 victory over Cortland, which was receiving votes in the USCHO.com poll. He opened the scoring 61 seconds into the game. He then tacked on Hobart’s fifth goal of the game in the second period. Aquaro has scored the game-winning goal in four straight games.
Aquaro leads Hobart with nine points on six goals and three assists. He is first in the nation in game-winning goals and power-play goals (3). He is ninth in the nation in points per game (1.50).
Beaver was 1-0-0 in goal last weekend. He stopped all 28 shots he faced against the Red Dragons. It was Beaver’s first collegiate shutout. Seventeen of his saves came in the second period. Beaver is 3-0-0 to start the season. He has a 1.00 goals-against average and a .962 save percentage. Beaver is fourth in the nation in the nation in save percentage and GAA.
Hobart is 6-0-0 on the season and is off to their best start since the 2007-08 season. The Statesmen started that year with eight straight victories. Hobart will be back in action this weekend, Nov. 18-19, when they hit the road to take on Johnson and Wales and UMass Boston.
