State police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident in the town of Horseheads.
According to troopers it happened on State Route 14 on Saturday around 5 p.m.
When troopers arrived, they discovered an individual with serious injuries and life saving techniques were performed. The man was later identified as, Jon Gearhart, age 44, who was transported to Arnot Ogden Medical Center were he was pronounced deceased.
Police say Gearhart was driving on Route 14 when he pulled over and attempted to remove a deer carcass from the roadway when he was struck by a vehicle.
The operator of the vehicle drove away. The road was closed for several hours while crews worked the scene.
It reopened a little before 10 p.m.
The investigation is continuing, and State Police are asking anyone with information to call the State Police in Canadaigua at 585-398-4100.
