Voters in Steuben County shot down a proposal that would’ve reduced the total number of legislative districts from 13 to 11.
Proposition #1 on ballots in Steuben was defeated by a 10 point margin. Just 44% of those who showed up to the polls voted in favor of it.
Had it been approved, Districts #6 and #8 would have been eliminated. The communities within the districts would’ve been incorporated into those surrounding it.
Officials said the lines were drawn based on 2020 census.
The Steuben County Legislature can either propose a new plan and put it in front of voters or move on.
It’s unclear at this point which option they will exercise.
