A pair of new polls show Governor Kathy Hochul has a lead in his race against Rep. Lee Zeldin. However, that lead has been shrinking in recent weeks.
“I’ve always said I was an underdog,” Hochul said on Friday to reporters. “I’ve been in the job a short time. I have a short, compressed period for people to get to know me. As I said on my first day in office, you may not know me, but I know you.”
The comments came as a surprise to many, because of the voter enrollment advantage Democrats have in New York. Hochul also boasts a significant fundraising advantage over Zeldin.
The Republican says it comes down to enthusiasm. Last week he told reporters that his campaign was generating interest from voters, while Hochul’s began falling flat among Democrats.
That tracks with polling from the last several weeks. While Democrats are still hopeful across the board that they can win important races and maintain control of the House and Senate – pivotal races like the gubernatorial contest in New York has gotten close.
Early voting began this past weekend across New York.
