State police identify Newark homicide victim: No suspects named yet, but public’s assistance sought by investigators

State police have provided an update on the homicide investigation unfolding in the village of Newark.

According to troopers, 49-year-old Christopher VanCleaf was killed early-Saturday morning near Tommy’s Bar in the village of Newark.

The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is asked to call state police at (585) 398-4100.

No suspects or arrests have been announced yet.


Homicide investigation continues in Newark

State police are investigating a homicide in Wayne County.

New York State Police said in a release during the early morning hours that the Newark PD, and Wayne County Sheriff’s Office were also involved.

The homicide occurred on Murray Street in the village of Newark around 2:15 a.m. on Saturday, October 29th.


The Village of Newark sent out a press release later in the morning on Saturday, confirming that state police were leading a homicide investigation.

Their update indicated that when police arrived – they found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.

He was pronounced dead at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital after being transported there.

Local leaders issued the following statements on Saturday:

“I’ve  been to so many incidents like this during my career and I know how chaotic and challenging they are to handle. And it sounds like our officers in the Newark Police Department did a great job with it as did the assisting agencies. It is one of the reasons why I’m so proud to be their incoming chief”
