The Hobart College soccer team was defeated by St. Lawrence, 1-0, in the regular season finale for both teams on MacAllaster Field Saturday afternoon. The Statesmen conclude the regular season with an 8-4-5 overall record and a 3-2-4 mark in the Liberty League.
With the win, St. Lawrence (11-1-5, 6-0-3) clinched the Liberty League regular season title Hobart will be the sixth seed in the conference tournament and will take on No. 3 seed Skidmore on Tuesday in a first-round contest.
KEY STATS:
- The Saints finished the game with a 16-11 advantage in shots and had all eight of the game’s corner kicks.
- Christian Burkhart started in goal and made six saves in 90 minutes of work for the Statesmen.
FIRST HALF:
- Both teams had five shots in the first half.
- Liam Dillon nearly gave Hobart a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute, but Ben Woelfinger smothered the scoring attempt. Nolan Fierro’srebound attempt was blocked by a defender.
- In the 36th minute, Robbie Caron’s header attempt went just over the crossbar.
SECOND HALF:
- In the 74th minute, Woelfinger made another big save on an Amad Miller shot.
- Marvin Sibanda scored the game-winning goal on the counter-attack. Ben Cull was credited with an assist on the goal, serving a perfect long ball to Sibanda, who slipped the shot past Burkhart. It was Sibanda’s seventh goal of the season.
UP NEXT:
The Statesmen will be back in action on Tuesday, November 1, when they travel to Saratoga Springs, to take on Skidmore. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
