Auburn woman facing murder charge for March shooting will go to trial in early-2023

An Auburn woman facing a murder charge for a March shooting will go to trial on January 9th, 2023.

Shameek Copes, 28, of Auburn has been charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

A trial date was set for January 9th.


A 37-year-old Syracuse man, identified as John Wesley Smith III, was killed on March 15th.

Copes pleaded not guilty to the murder and weapons charges.

Prosecutors say Copes was caught on camera killing Smith.

Rome Canzano, who is representing Copes, argued that due to media coverage of the incident – the trial should be moved into a different jurisdiction.

Copes was denied bail.
